AMIGURUMI TOAD BAG (“FROG PRINCE”)

Have you met the dashing prince? Legend has it that all it takes is one kiss for him to magically transform into a handsome beau, making all your royal dreams come true. The only thing we know for certain is this little guy is mega cute and super handy: As a mini-bag, this kissing toad will hold small accessories like your earbud case, phone charger, or a small bottle of lotion. Keep little nick-nacks handy by clipping the critter to your purse, or inside your gym bag for easy access to small items. Your little prince is eager to help – give him small items to guard as special treasure.

My Pufferfish Purse workshop was met with so much enthusiasm last year, that when the next opportunity came up for another workshop I was excited to experiment with a spin-off, in the form of a toad. That’s where the idea for this chubby little toad came from and I can’t wait to hear what you think of the “Frog Prince” Kissing Toad bag.

Everyone’s favorite part was the puffer’s kiss so I wanted the toad to have kissy-lips too. Here’s a very satisfying video showing off the drawstring-pull:

I designed this pattern specifically for a workshop held in Pretoria (SA), which was sponsored by Elite Yarns and Elite Fabrics. They provided all the materials in the most amazing kits – and a beautiful venue with snacks – for 2 classes on a Saturday last November. The event was fantastic and I look forward to doing it again some time. If you want to be notified of any workshops in your area, make sure you’re on my mailing list

Because it was designed for a workshop, it’s intended to work up fast. To achieve this, I used triple strands of DK for most of the pieces. This results in a firm pouch that keeps its shape even when empty, and includes the bonus of interesting colour effects. All the toads in the pictures are made using assorted combinations of a single 5-colour palette (blue, turquoise, pink, yellow and white).

You don’t have to use triple strands if you prefer not to. You can substitute with thicker yarn, making sure that you match the gauge swatch in the pattern. But you will need thinner yarn (DK) for some of the pieces in order for them to turn out the correct size. This will be up to your own experimentation but if you need extra guidance, visit the Projectarian community here for forum-style support.

Being a fast project also makes it ideal for when you don’t have much free time but want to do something you can complete. Which also makes it ideal as a gift, especially if you need multiples, or as market stock if you’re a seller (you are of course welcome to sell any physical items that you’ve made using my patterns).

Since the pattern was made for a workshop, it contains a lot more content than my regular patterns. When you buy the pattern, you’ll get a 21-page PDF tutorial with loads of photos and detailed written instructions usual, but the PDF also includes 20 short (silent) videos that demonstrate some of the steps as you go. You’ll also get my free tips booklet as usual, but in addition to this, you’ll get a print-friendly version of the pattern which is only 2 pages with no pictures. Alternatively, you can get the pattern as a virtual workshop. Purchasing the virtual workshop option in my shop gives you access to all of the content described above, but in addition to all of that, you also get access to a long-form video where I demonstrate the making of the entire project from start to finish in a 90-minute tutorial with voice-over.

I hope you’ll try this cutie! Let me know if you do by tagging me @Projectarian and share it using #KissingToadBag. Thanks for visiting and I’ll see you again soon!
