Chewy is an amigurumi dragon/gumball machine hybrid. He has a clear plastic fillable bauble that fits into his belly, filled with crocheted gumballs. When you make your own Chewy, you can fill your bauble with anything you like, such as real gumballs or Christmas chocolates.
These fillable baubles are available all year round on Amazon. For those in SA, I got my baubles here.
If you don’t have access to baubles for any reason, I have included a crocheted option for you. The pattern comes with directions for making a bauble that fits in Chewy’s belly like the plastic one. It’s made to look like a Christmas bauble but you can customize yours by omitting the finial and adding other deatils. For example, a white ball with coloured speckles could be a giant gobstopper. You could make a decorative ball for easter, a beach ball for summer, or a snowball for winter.
You can also leave Chewy’s belly empty to use as a ring dish next to your bed. Another little side feature that Chewy has is a movable head. You can twist the head from side to side, to pose Chewy looking in a different direction.
I hope you’ll enjoy this pattern as a fun holiday craft this December!
COMING UP…
I’ll be taking a much-needed break from work next month, although my pattern sale will continue running into December via automated posts in my Facebook group. I will also be popping in from time to time to see what patterns and yarns you’re picking out for your projects so please keep me updated by posting your pics in my group or tagging me @projectarian on Instagram or Facebook! If you have any questions about patterns, always make use of my support group to get help.
Following are some sneak peeks of what to look forward to. I have a virtual workshop which I wanted to run in November but my excuse is that my laptop broke and had to be replaced, so it’ll be early next year instead
Thank you for all your support this year! I’ve had the absolute best year ever and I’m so happy you guys enjoyed the projects. We started the year with Butterbun, which is my first pattern release that involves some applique. It was a pattern I designed purely for my own enjoyment but you guys ended up really loving it and I was so happy! The launch of my new book took me by surprise in January and I still can’t quite believe there’s a book in the world with my name on it. Then we had a Valentine’s add-on for Hubble the Squid, the ever-popular freebie that is super fast and easy to make.
Projectarian was invited to the Cape Town Yarn Festival, which turned out to be such an amazing event with the local debut of my book, the Pufferfish Purse which was my first viral pattern ever – and there was also my first virtual workshop. It was all suuuuuper scary and new but also the best thing ever, ever! Then we had the Underwater Tails Crochet Along with Hobbii, and Projectarian patterns started coming to Hobbii Plus. It’s been extremely relaxing and nostalgic to remake my models for Hobbii Plus using Hobbii yarns. It’s an ongoing project so new patterns will be added continuously, as I find gaps to prepare each pattern for them.
We also had Dreamweaver Fox which is another applique pattern and I’m super proud of it. I have more ideas for this sort of thing, I just wish I had more time!!! Then we had Fly-Catcher Frog Bag, and I also prepared a toad workshop that I presented in partnership with Elite Yarns, Elite Fabrics and PNA, in Pretoria (it’s the virtual workshop coming to the rest of the world soon).
That brings us to the present where I currently have another pattern in processing for Hobbii Plus, more plans to work with Hobbii in the coming months, and too many new ideas on my To-Do list. There are also plans for more collabs with Elite Yarn/Elite Fabrics/PNA – I have a whole box of Yarn Art and Kartopu to play with from Elite yarns! – And just like that, my schedule is almost full until 2026 before we’ve even finished 2024!
Thank you all so SO much for making this possible. I only have this job because you buy my patterns. It’s my honor to keep designing fun, projects for you, and I can’t wait to show you what’s next! I hope you have a wonderful December with your favorite people, a magical Christmas, and the best new year!
