Welcome to the 2020 Amigurumi World Tour! 12 designers from around the world got together to create an animal pattern from each of our countries and now the beasts are going on tour to a crochet hook near you! Lyra is my contribution to this global collaboration. Jump on the pattern train for 2 new designs per week from 16 March – 26 April!

Lyra the Hyena is from South Africa and you can get her pattern in my Etsy shop. Of course she’s going to be needing a bag for her toothbrush and phone while she’s traveling, so I’ve made her this fancy saddlebag! This saddlebag pattern is FREE and you can get it right here! BLANKET DIAGRAM

BLANKET PART 1

R1: Using mint green, ch16. Starting in 3rd ch from hook, 14DC. (14)
R2-4: Ch2, turn. 14DC. (14)
Ch1, tie off.

Check for fit: This swatch should be able to fit horizontally on your hyena, at the narrowest part between the legs, with some space for working 2 rows of SC all around the edge of the blanket. Adjust your hook and yarn as required (hook down + thinner yarn for a smaller blanket and vice versa).

R5: Join dark grey with a SS at 1st DC of R4. Ch1, 14SC. Remove loop from hook, do not tie off. (14)
TIP: When working the alternating dark grey and white rows, attach a stitch marker to the discarded yarn loop to prevent unraveling. Do not tie off between alternating rows.
R6: Join white with a SS at 1st SC of R5. Ch1, 14SC. Remove loop from hook, do not tie off. (14)
R7: Place the dark grey loop back on your hook. Ch1, turn. Keep unused loop to the back of your work piece throughout. SS in the last SC of R6, ch1. 14SC. (14)
R8-10: Repeat alternating rows of white and dark grey by the same method. Tie off dark grey at the end of R9 and white at the end of R10. (14)
R11: On RS of R10, join yellow with a SS in BLO of the 1st SC. Ch1, 14SC. (14)
R12-16: Ch1, turn. 14SC. (14)
Ch1, tie off.

TRIANGLES

T1

R1: Return to R10 (the last white row). Working into RS of the unused loops, join magenta with a SS at the 1st SC. Ch1, 7SC. (7)
R2: Ch1, turn. SC-decr, 3SC, SC-decr. (5)
R3: Ch1, turn. SC-decr, 1SC, SC-decr. (3)
R4: Ch1, turn. SC-decr all 3 sts together. (1)
R5: Ch1, turn. 1SC. (1)

T2

R1: Return to R10. Working into RS of the unused loops again, join dark with a SS at the 1st available SC after T1. Ch1, 7SC. (7)
R2: Ch1, turn. SC-decr, 3SC, SC-decr. (5)
R3: Ch1, turn. SC-decr, 1SC, SC-decr. (3)
R4: Ch1, turn. SC-decr all 3 sts together.

BLANKET PART 2

R1: Return to the starting ch of R1. Join dark grey in RS at the 1st ch. Ch1, 14SC. (14)
R2-6: Alternating rows of white and dark grey by the same method as part 1. Tie off dark grey at the end of R5 and white at the end of R6. (14)
R7: On RS of R6, join yellow with a SS in BLO of the 1st SC. Ch1, 14SC. (14)
R8-12: Ch1, turn. 14SC. (14)
Ch1, tie off.

Make T3 & T4 the same as T1 & T2, attaching them at R6.

BAGS

Make the 2 bags the same and join them to either end of the blanket as directed below.

Piece A

Make 2
R1: Using camel, 3SC in magic ring. (3)
R2: Ch1, turn. SC-incr X 3. (6)
R3: Ch1, turn. *1SC, SC-incr* X 3. (9)
R4: Ch1, turn. *2SC, SC-incr* X 3. (12)
R5: Ch1, turn. *3SC, SC-incr* X 3. (15)

EDGE: Ch1, starting in the last SC of R7 and working 1SC into the side of each row, 14SC across the edge of your work piece. (14)

Piece B

Make 2
R1-7 + edge: Make a second one the same as piece A, but don’t tie off at the end.
R8: Ch1, working in BLO of R7, 21SC. (21)
R9: Ch1, turn. 21SC. (21)
Ch1, tie off.

JOINING PIECE A & B TO THE BLANKET

Working into the sides of the rows on the blanket, join orange yarn with a SS the last white row of the blanket (the join may be at part 1 or 2 i.e. R16 or R12). 1SC into the same sp, then work 1SC into each of the remaining 6 yellow rows.

Working into the unused sts of R7 on the bag piece B, 21SC.

Working into the sides of the rows on the blanket, 1SC in each of the 6 yellow rows, 1SC in each of the 6 alternating white and dark grey rows, 2SC in each of the 4 mint green DC rows.

By the same method, 1SC in each of the next 12 rows, 21SC in the unused sts on the bag, 1SC in each of the next 12 rows on the blanket, 2SC in each of the next 4 rows, 1SC in each of the remaining 5 rows.
Join with a SS in the 1st SC, tie off.
Total st count = 106.

BAG FLAP

R1: Flip the bag up onto the blanket so that the stitches on the edge of the bag are aligned with the stitches on the last row of the blanket. Insert your hook at the 3rd SC on the last row of the blanket. Push your hook through the 3rd SC on the edge of the bag as well. Both pieces are now on your hook. Join camel with a SS, ch1. Work 1SC to join the pieces. Continue working through both layers. 9SC, leaving the remaining 2 sts unworked. (10)

R2: Ch1, turn. SC-decr, 6SC, SC-decr. (8)
R3: Ch1, turn. SC-decr, 4SC, SC-decr. (6)
R4: Ch1, turn. SC-decr, 2SC, SC-decr. (4)
R5: Ch1, turn. SC-decr X 2. (4)
Ch1, tie off.

BAG FLAP EDGE

Return to the last row of the blanket again. Insert your hook at the unused SC on the right-hand side of the flap, through both layers (through both the blanket and the bag). Join camel with a SS, ch1. Working into the side of the flap, 1SC in each of the next 5 rows. 1SC in each of the 2 sts of R5. 1SC in each of the 5 rows. 1SS in the next available SC on the last row of the blanket, through both layers.
Tie off.

On the last row of the blanket again, join light blue with a SS at the 1st SC, in both layers. Do not ch1. 1SC in each of the next 6 sts on the flap. 1SS in the next st, ch5, 1SC in the same sp as the SS. 1SC in each of the remaining 5 sts. SS in the last available SC on the last row of the blanket, through both layers.
Do not tie off.

Flip the flap up out of the way and continue working with light blue on your hook. Lay bag piece A on top of B, with RS of the last row of A facing up. Insert your hook in WS of the 1st available SC on piece B. Push your hook through WS of the 1st available st on piece A as well (the last SC of R7). Both pieces are now on your hook. Work 1SC to join them. Continue working through both layers. 20SC, using up all the rem sts on R7. (21)

1SS into the WS of the last st on the top edge of piece A. Tie off.

Weave in all the loose ends.

FINISHING TRIMS

BELLS

Stuff the bags then sew a bell on R3 of each bag so the flap can open and close.

TASSELS

For the triangles: Cut 3 X 10 cm lengths of pink. Bunch them together and fold them in half. Insert your hook at the last SC of the triangle from the WS. Draw up the pink bunch of loops, draw the tails through the loop, then tug the tails to tighten the knot. Trim ends to 2 cm. Repeat for each of the 4 triangles.

For the bags: Cut 2 X 10 cm lengths of mint green. Attach them by the same method, working from WS of the edge of the orange row. Place 7 tassels so that they are centred with the bag, using up 7SC along the edge (leaving 46SC un-worked on either side). Repeat for both bags.

NECK STRAP

TIP: You may adjust the length to fit your hyena. With the saddle centred on her back and hanging evenly on the sides of her body (between the legs), make the chain long enough to start at the spine, loop around the chest, and end back at the spine.

Counting from left to right and working into the WS of the orange row, join orange yarn with a SS at the 23rd st (this is the right-hand stitch at the halfway point on the blanket). Ch105, making sure the chain isn’t twisted (check carefully – otherwise that’s 105 sts to redo!), 1SS in the WS on each of the next 2 sts on the orange row.

Ch1, turn. 105SC into the chain. 1SS in the next st on the orange row.
Tie off and weave in the loose ends.

BEADING

Optional edge without beads: Join peach at the 1st SC after the green trim, ch1, SC in each st across (including the neck strap, when working the front edge). Finish in the last SC before the green trim on the other end of the saddle. Ch1, tie off.
Stitch count at front edge = 42 + neck strap
Stitch count at back edge = 46

Edge with beads: The bead placement is not precise. You can attach as many or as few beads as you prefer. There are 149 sts along the beaded edge at the front of my saddle and 46 sts along the beaded edge at the back, so it’s not possible to place them an even amount of stitches apart unless I place them on every 2nd st. I placed mine on every 5th st, so my beads are slightly uneven, but you can’t even tell.

You’ll need to string your beads onto your yarn before you begin crocheting (enough beads to work the front of the saddle and when it’s complete, string enough beads to work the back of the saddle). To calculate how many beads to use, decided how far apart you want them, for example, I want a bead on every 5th st. The divide your number of stitches by your number of beads, i.e 126/5 = 29.8, so I’ll string on 29 beads (yes, there are 30 in the picture- I was paranoid).

(See how to attach a bead below) Starting in the 1st available st after the mint green tassels, join peach with a SS, ch1. *4SC, add a bead as you work the next SC* repeat all along the edge. Tie off and repeat along the other edge between the mint green tassels.

To attach a bead, slide the bead right up to your work piece before working your stitch at the desired position. Keeping the bead to the front of your work piece, 1SC in the desired st.
