do you have a pattern for the cowboy hat too? super cute
Thanks Gwen! Unfortunately not – I jotted down some notes when I made it but never published the pattern. It’s a pity because I do like how it came out. Perhaps in the future!
Just so you know, I’ve published the pattern for the cowboy hat since we last spoke! π You can find it here:
http://www.projectarian.com/2017/08/21/cowboy-hat-free-crochet-pattern/
I would like to make these boots for a newborn (about a 3″ sole?) I am comfortable with the required stitches but cannot figure out how to reduce the pattern for a newborn. Could someone help me out please?
Hi Mona.
To get a 3 inch sole, you can start off with a chain of 12. Work your first row with the HDC stitch, and make 4 fewer increases around the sole.
So the pattern will be as follows:
2HDC in 3rd ch from hook, 2HDC in next ch, HDC in the next 8 ch. 2HDC in the last 2 chain. Repeat down the other side of the chain.
The next row will be SCs, leaving out 4 increases again:
2SC in 1st 2 sts. SC in next 8 sts, 2sc in next 2 sts. Repeat down the other side.
And the last row will be SCs again, leaving out 4 increases again:
SC in 1st st, 2sc in next st. SC in next st, 2SC in next st. SC in next 8 sts. (2SC in next st, SC in next st) twice. Repeat down the other side.
That will give you a 3 inch sole that you can use as a guide for reducing the rest of the pattern, leaving out the correct number of stitches along the straight sides, and when it comes to decreasing.
I hope this helps!
~J
I can’t quite get the decrease right on the boot
Unfortunately I wont get the time to do full instructions for this, you’ll just have to do a bit of trial and error <3
Did the newborn sole following the ch 12 base and 4 less increases. With hdc & sc.
R1: ch12, 2hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next 8 ch, 2hdc in last ch. working down opposite side of ch, 2hdc in 1st ch. hdc in next 8 ch. 2hdc in last ch. join with a ss into 1st hdc.
R2: ch1. 2sc in next 2stc. Sc in next 8 sts. 2 sc in next 4 sts. Sc in next 8 sts. 2sc in next 2 sts. Join with ss.
R3: ch1. (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) 2 times. Sc in next 8 sts. (2sc in next st. sc in next sts) 2 times. (Sc in next sts, 2sc in next sts) 2 times.sc in next 8 sts. (2sc in next st. sc in next st) 2 times. Join with ss into 1st sc.
Thanks for this Aislinn π
After completing row 3 do you follow the rest of the pattern as written for newborn?
As mentioned in previous comments, the rest of the boot will be up to your own trial and error, the pattern is only available in one size π
I was wondering the same thing
First of all this is the best directions for a sole pattern ever. Second,I’m new to this boot project and I so want to get it right. On the first round of the boot ,are you saying work the rest of the project in back loops only? Please excuse my ignorance .
Hi Staci. I’m so glad you like the pattern! Don’t worry – all questions are welcome! Only the first round of the boot is worked in the back loop, and the rest of the boot is worked in both loops. I have edited the pattern to be more clear. Thanks for the input π
Thank you so much Jessie.
You’re welcome!
I am working on the boot right now but have noticed that the picture shows single crochet while the pattern is asking for double crochet. Am I doing it wrong?
Hi Monika. If you follow the pattern, and use double crochets when called-for, it should work out fine! The picture that looks like it has single crochets is just a different version of the pattern. You’ll see that the brown booties right at the top of the page are worked with double crochets, and that’s what you’re aiming for! I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have more questions.
~Jessie
First i would like to say a great big thank you. Super cute and super easy, love, love, love it. I am still a novice and am a little confused with the instructions for row 8 and the 4 SC into sides of sts. I tried to google how to do it, but was unsuccessful. Could you offer a little more description for this please. Thabks again.
Hi Jode! You’re welcome and I’m glad you like the pattern! Let’s see if I can try explain it a bit better.
By the end of row 7, your shoe looks like a little slipper and you’ve just completed the rounded toe end.
On row 8, you’ll be working a SC all around the top of the shoe, starting at the toe (the throat line) where your hook is.
To work the SCs into the toe area specifically, you have to work into the sides of the rows, because you can’t work into the normal stitch loops.
So, insert your hook into the side of the stitch from the previous row (this will be the 1st SC on R7), and make a SC. Repeat 3 more times, working into the sides of the previous rows, going along the edge of the toe until you have worked a total of 4 SCs along that edge. By this time, you should reach the point where you can begin working into the stitch loops as usual.
You will then continue to SC all around the top of the shoe, coming back to the toe, and then work a total of 4 more SCs into the sides of the rows on the toe, until you reach the 1st SC again.
It doesn’t have to be perfect and I know it can be hard to spot exactly where to insert your hook if you haven’t done it before, but you really can just stick your hook into any gap you can see for this little section on the toes, and it will all blend just fine.
I hope this helped. Let me know if you have any more questions!
~Jessie
Thank you Jessie. I was having problems with this row too and I’m an experienced crocheter. I think I’ve got it right now!
Hi Felicity! Sorry it’s a bit confusing… I don’t know to explain it better – haha! I’ve always heard of it as “working into the sides of the stitches”, or “working around the stitch posts.” I don’t know if there are any, more common terms to explain it. I hope you managed okay with your booties!
~J
super cute , thanks for sharing!!!!
Thanks Susanne, I’m glad you like it!
Sorry for asking what is probably an obvious question, but what kind of yarn did you use? I’m assuming sport or DK since the hook is so small, but I want to be sure.
Thanks for the super cute pattern!
Cheers,
Shauna
Shauna, thank you so much for asking because I never would’ve realized that I left out such an important piece of information!! Haha – I actually forgot to include the yarn weight. But yes, you’re right, it is DK yarn indeed!
Thanks again!
~Jessie
Am I counting wrong somewhere on R3 for the sole? My numbers aren’t coming out right at all…
I am having the same problem, I’ve gone back a few times and started the row again, but I am still not coming out right. What is my problem?
Sorry Kat, there was an error there, but I’ve fixed it now! Thanks for letting me know π
Hi. I seem to still be having trouble with R3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The pattern is so adorable, I don’t want to NOT make the booties for a baby boy coming into the family (very) soon! Thanks in advance!
Sorry Kristi, there was another error in R3! (What is it with this one row giving us so many issues?! – Haha!) Thanks for letting me know there was a problem. I’m pretty sure it’s fixed now. ?? I find it very difficult to find the mistakes in my own patterns – I can look at the same thing a million times before I realize I wrote it down wrong!
Nevermind….. I walked away from it for a little bit and came back and figured it out lol
I’m glad you figured it out! If you run into any other problems and need help, just ask!
~Jessie
Hi there , love the booties , they are adorable . (:
Had a quick question , since it says its for 3-6 months , do you think switching to worsted weight yarn with maybe a size G or F hook would make it fit a 6-9 month old ? Or would that make it too big ?
Hi Angelina,
Thank you, I’m so glad to hear you like the pattern.
For a 6-9 month bootie, the sole only needs to be about 1 cm longer than this one, so that hook/ yarn combo might make it too big. To test, I would make 1 sole and measure the length from toe to heel. It should measure around 11cm long, to fit a little 6-9 month foot.
Hope that helps somewhat!
~Jessie
Would love to have the hat pattern too. Thanks
Hi Becky,
I will let you know if I publish it!
~Jessie
Icant find the pattern. Only the comments.
Thanks for letting me know, Virginia! All fixed now!
~ Jessie
hi i want to make these for a friends baby but all i have is worsted weight yarn is it possible to use that to make this pattern? and if so what hook would i use and would the pattern change at all?
Hi Susana,
Your booties will probably come out a little larger using worsted weight yarn, but you might also get lucky and they could work out, since all yarns are not created equal!
I would try making 1 sole with a 3mm hook, and see what size it comes out (you’ll want it to be around 4 inches long). If it comes out more than 1/4 inch longer than it should be, I would remove some stitches along the length of the sole, and continue with the bootie pattern, leaving out that same amount of stitches along the length of the foot as you go.
Good luck, and please let us know how it worked out for you, so that the other crocheters here can also benefit from your experiments!
~Jessie
Do you have the full pattern for newborns?
Hi Anita!
Unfortunately not. This is the only pattern I’ve published for these booties. In my response to Mona (above), I just laid out the basics for getting started with a newborn size, but you would need to figure out the rest of the shoe as you go. I hope it helps somewhat!
~Jessie
lovely. Am going to try the hat too although looks difficult.
Hi Mieke! Good luck with the hat. Although I’ve only posted the pattern recently on my blog, it’s one of the first patterns I ever wrote and at the time when I made the hat, I struggled quite a bit to figure it out. But I was still a beginner in those days – I hope you manage without too much trouble!
~J
I would like to make these boots, but I am a bit confused. The boots pictured are done in single crochet stitches and the pattern says double crochet. Do you have the pattern for the boots pictured? Please and thank you π
Hi Jessie ο
The brown boots in the first picture are done with a DC, which gives almost exactly the same end result if you compare it to the other pictures. Your boots will function the same, and look almost exactly identical if you follow the pattern, using the DC.
I hope it works out for you!
~Jessie
After printing the instructions out, without the photos. Can I make a suggestion to your instructions? If the color changes for the next round, even though it says new yarn, I didn’t change color, so I suggest add new yarn color for the new round. I have one almost finished, and it’s one color after the sole……
Hi Karen π
Thanks for your suggestion, I really appreciate the feedback. I’ve edited the pattern to be clearer and I’m sure there are others who will also appreciate that clarification!!
~Jessie
I just found this patter. These booties are so cute!! I will definitely try them. A perfect gift for my little baby nice π Thank you so much for sharing this π
Thanks Sylvia, I’m so happy you like the pattern! Good luck with your booties and I’m sure your niece will love them!
Never done anything like this before so I’m confused how many do I chain to great started.
Hey Irene. As the pattern says (in R1 of the section titled SOLE), ch14 to start. Then work 3DC into the 3rd ch from your hook.
I only have medium worsted weight yarn and every time I’m making the boots they come out too big. How do I modify the pattern for a bigger sized yarn? Please help!
Carina, unfortunately, I don’t have instructions for changing the size when using different materials and tools other than the recommended ones. You can try omitting some stitches along the length of the sole of the bootie, and omitting that same number of stitches when you start working the main foot part. A smaller hook might help too. Good luck! π
Can I be the third person to ask you to please, please, please write up the hat pattern? I’m quite a newbie to this whole crochet thing: I can follow written directions pretty well (video, even better) and have learned all my basic stitches, but as far as looking at something and having any clue how to make it, that’s still way beyond my expertise.
Thanks for your input Annalisa – it helps when people tell me what patterns they’d like to see, so I’ll seriously try fit this hat pattern into my schedule for you guys! π
Update: I’ve published the hat pattern since we last spoke! You can find it here:
http://www.projectarian.com/2017/08/21/cowboy-hat-free-crochet-pattern/
Hi, can you tell me if you stich into the first stich that the slip stich was made onto? Also, do you include the slip stitch at the end as a stitch when counting? I had made another her pair of baby booties and the pattern used the first stitch as the one that was slipped into but didn’the count the slip stitch as a stitch at the end. Thank you for any clarification that you can provide.
Sorry, my recent question wasn’the clear. Do you crochet into the stitch that the slip stitch was made into? The other question was clear I think. Thanks.
Hi Diane! The stitch that the slip stitch is made into, counts as your first stitch of the Row and you should crochet your first stitch of the next Row into it. The slip stitch itself doesn’t count as a stitch. I hope that clears it up! π
It does, thank you for the help and this pattern!
You’re welcome!
Hi Jessie, i’m lost on the star. It has directions for one ‘arm’ then skip stitch and slip stitch into the next 5 stitches and tie off. Should that be sc 5 times into next stitch? Then repeat R 1? Thank you for your help, I tried to problem solved but I’m relatively new to reading patterns.
I just kept playing with it and decided to slip stitch in the chain after the skipped stitch and make the arm off of that. Looks decent. βΊ
Thanks for spotting that Diane. There were brackets missing there in R2, to indicate that you’re supposed to repeat that first arm 5 times. I’ve fixed it, so it should make sense now π
Love the boots and hat – Do you have a pattern for the hat?
Thanks Daisy! Unfortunately, I haven’t published the pattern for the hat but I have tentative plans to do so in the future π
I am so glad I found these, so adorable. Am I reading it right- use 2 strand of medium wt. yarn and use a D hook, or can you use worsted wt. yarn and use a D size hook?
I’m so happy you found it useful, Aneta!
Yes, you should use a size D hook. For the yarn weight it says: “YARN WEIGHT: Double Knit (Light Worsted / 8ply/ 11wpi)”
This means you should use a single strand of light worsted weight. Double Knit, 8ply and 11wpi are simply other terms for the same weight of yarn, depending on where you live. I think that’s where the confusion came in? I hope that clears it up!
I love the boots!! I am trying to duplicate the brown ones with the star. Do I still need to change colors in row 5? Do you have any other tips for the brown pair? Thank you for sharing!!
I’m glad you like them Mimi! If you follow the pattern, your boots should come out just like the brown ones (y)
Do you know of a pattern for a vest and skirt to match it
Nope, sorry Sue. I’d try Googling it or searching Pinterest for patterns.
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. The booties are so adorable. I am ready to make them π
You’re welcome Sylvia. I hope you enjoy making them!
Oh these boots turned out fabulous! Thankyou!! Do you have the pattern for the hat available (free or for sale)? I’ve tried 3 others but they look nowhere as lovely as yours π
I’m so happy your boots turned out well, Kristen π The hat isn’t available yet, but due to popular demand, I am planning to publish it (totes free!). So watch this space, it will be coming soon! X
Hi Graciela. Sorry the translation isn’t helping you. Unfortunately this is the only version of the pattern that’s available right now. Maybe we can find someone willing to translate it to Spanish.
In one of the pictures it shows a cowboy hat with the boots, is there a pattern for this?
Hi Fern. I haven’t published the pattern for the hat yet – but it’s definitely in my plans for a future post so keep an eye our for it! (You can subscribe to get a notification when it’s published if you want)
Where do you start counting the 14 stitches to skip on R5 for the boot section, because my toe section keeps coming out a little off centre?
Hey Alex. You should start counting from the first stitch of your row. If it’s still off-center, find the center of the toe, then count 9 stitches back and join your yarn in the 9th st. Hope that helps!
Thanks, that works great now. I think my seam is travelling, so it wasn’t where it was supposed to be.
Glad I could help!
Do u have a pattern for diaper cover do u have a pattern fog doggie cowboy boots
Sorry Sandy, no diaper cover, but there are many free diaper cover patterns on the internet with different sizes and styles to choose from. Try a Google search, or have a look on Ravelry.com! I’m not sure what you mean about the “doggie cowboy boots” though? Do you mean boots for a dog? Either way, I only have these cowboy boots, and then a paid pattern for the “Fancy Dan Cowboy Boots”. There is a link at the top of the post for those.
Hi i just started these booties but i’ve opened mine about 3 times now im wondering if u acually slip stitch into the 2nd chain when finishing a round or the first dc of the last one like u say i tried the dc one but it looked as if everything was going crooked not quite sure what im doing wrong got any advice thanks again
Hi Jessy. You should definitely SS into the DC, as the pattern states. Sometimes a seam like this can pull skew, depending on your personal style of crocheting, your tension and technique. You can try tighten or loosen the tension of that slip stitch to produce a straighter seam. Blocking the seam in place when you’re done will also help.
Do you have the pattern for a 0/3 month cowboy boots
Hi Yvonne. No full pattern per se, but there are instructions for altering this one to fit 0-3m in the comments.
Please tell me you figured out the hat pattern!!!
Yes! The hat pattern was published a while ago. Click here for the pattern.
Feel free to subscribe so you know when the patterns you’re looking for get published. Subscribe here (no spam, I promise!)
Too cute! Pinned and can’t wait to try. Thanks for the free pattern!
Thanks for pinning, Jenn! Enjoy the pattern π
I have attempted this pattern several times and itβs turning out way to big. Iβm using baby yarn and a sz d hook….any thoughts
Hi Rhonda, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. I’m not sure why it would come out so much larger, it sounds like you’re using the right tools. Perhaps your tension is very loose, or the yarn is thicker than average. I’d try a smaller hook, and make a gauge swatch to ensure your work is the correct size (see GAUGE in BASIC INFORMATION near the top of the page).
You can also make a sole as your gauge swatch. The sole should be 3.5 – 3.75 inches long to fit a 3-6 month baby. I hope that helps!
Can you tell me how long the sole of the boot should be?
The sole should be 3.5 β 3.75 inches long to fit a 3-6 month baby.
I dont understand about row4(boot)13times….
Aska, it means make 13 DC decreases. Does that make sense?
Do you have for 3 years olds??
Hi Kelly! Unfortunately this is the only pattern size I have.
Are these instructions in Britain or American stitches?
Hey Karla! You can find pattern info at the beginning of the post with useful info including terminology which is USA π
I crocheted these boots, matched all stitch counts and ended up with a 6″ sole!!! I used an H size hook and #4 med. weight yard. So, what happened?
Hi Diane! Did you try making a gauge swatch first? Since all yarns are different (even when labeled as the same), and we all work with different tension, variations are inevitable. Near the beginning of the pattern I’ve provided a gauge swatch for you to match before making the booties to ensure yours come out the same as mine π
Thank you so much for the free pattern. You have a blessed day. ? Trish
You’re welcome, Trish. Enjoy it π
I love the pattern very much, and I am very excited to try it, how can I adjust the stitches to fit my one year old boy, can you help me dear
Thanks Randa! To make the booties bigger I would use thicker yarn and a larger hook, scaled up according to the tools used in this pattern. It might take a little trial and error to figure out the hook & yarn combo for the size you want.
Where is the pattern for the boots that are all sc on the top?
Sorry Terry, I’m not sure what you mean – this pattern does finish with SC around the top…?
Hello, amazing pattern. Just wondering if you allow the sale of finished products as long as I credit you as the designer. Thanks.
Hello and thank you! Yes, you may sell any items you’ve made using my patterns! π
Any suggestions on how to increase the stitching to accommodate toddler sizes? Specifically, 2 & 3 year old, normal shoe size 7 & 8. I know how to do the sole to fit these two toddler sizes just not sure how to build up the actual boot part to accommodate the sole size.
Hey Melissa! It would take some trial and error to figure out the design for a larger shoe. I wouldn’t be able to give you a simple conversion recipe, unfortunately. Personally, if I were to increase the boot size for a toddler I would just use thicker yarn and a bigger hook to match (scaled according to the pattern’s recommended supplies). I hope that helps somewhat!
Love it it is so cute
Thank you!
