EASTER BUNNY HEADBAND THAT WONT FLOP | FREE CROCHET PATTERN

Just in time for Easter, these are probably the best bunny ears you’ll ever make. Why? Well, besides for being super cute and having giant pompoms, they also point straight up, instead of sticking out at sideways angles from your head – plus they’re really sturdy and don’t flop around, but you can pose them if you want to.

See? The best.

ATTACH THE PIPE CLEANERS

Lay 2 ears on top of each other. Starting in the center, at the bottom of the ear, insert your hook through both layers and join yarn with a SS. Ch1, and then working around the pipe cleaner and through both layers, SC all the way around the ear, sandwiching the pipe cleaner between the two layers. Bend the pipe cleaner as you go, following the angles of the ear’s edge.

This will attach the pipe cleaner securely, conceal the ends, and hide it really well!

Clip off any excess pipe cleaner.

Repeat on the other ear. Make sure to turn it over first to make the other ear opposite!

Tip: Work your SCs into the sides of the stitches, and make two SC per row; alternate with one stitch around the post of an HDC and the next one between two rows. Here I stretched the rows apart for this picture so you can clearly see the rows and the spaces between them.

Tip: You can join two pipe cleaners by twisting the ends around each other if they are too short.

MAKE THE POMPOMS

I used these plastic templates for making my pompoms. If you don’t have any and would like to make yours the same way, this handy tutorial by Homemade Gifts Made Easy uses cardboard to get exactly the same result. The diameters of the templates I used are:

Small: Outer = 35mm; Inner = 15mm.

Medium: Outer = 55mm; Inner = 25mm.

Large: Outer = 70mm; Inner = 30mm.

Tie the pompoms with a long enough thread so that you can use the tails to sew the pompoms to your headband.

I wanted mine to be really dense and perfectly round. To get yours the same, wind as much yarn as you can onto your template to get that density. You can wind a bunch of threads at once to make it got even faster.

To make a pompom perfectly round, you have to trim it that way. It makes things a bit easier to leave the pompom on the template while you trim it and try to get all the yarn exactly the same length, then remove it from the template and trim any areas that still need it.

Make 1 large, 1 medium and 3 small.

ASSEMBLE EVERYTHING

Fold the bottom corners of the ears towards the center. Thread a needle with about 1.5 meters of white yarn. Tie it with a tight knot to the middle of your headband.

Sew one ear to the headband with a whip stitch. Pull your stitch taught as you go, winding it around the headband and sewing it through the ear. (Tip: Using a headband with little teeth really grips the stitches.)

Tie off and weave in the loose ends. Repeat with the other ear.

Now it’s time to sew the pompoms on. Sew them directly to the ears, but only to the top layers, so the coloured yarn doesn’t show on the back of the ear. Start by attaching the red one in the middle, and then the others on either side. Weave in the loose ends.
