This is one of those “recipe”-type patterns that you can alter to fit any size of teething ring; plastic or wooden. If you’re new to amigurumi, you might find these tips useful.
This specific pattern has a sloth’s face, but you can easily change the features to be a bear or some other animal. I made this one for my little nephew, along with a pile of other baby toys for him, which are the reason there have been soo many crochet posts around here! And yes, there are still many more to come.
SUPPLIES
2.5 mm crochet hook
Yarn in 4 colours (I used white, blue, light grey and dark grey)

CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS
CROCHET AROUND THE TEETHING RING
1.) Start with a chain. It should be long enough to fit loosely around your teething ring. (I started with 10 chains.)
2.) Working into the back of the 1st chain, SS to join.
3.) Ch1. Working into front of chain as usual, SC in each ch around. (I worked 10 SCs around.)
4.) Working the round (in a spiral), continue working rounds of SC’s until your teething ring is covered.
The crocheted piece will be able to move freely at first, and you can twist it around the teething ring as you work, making your stitches easy to access.
If your teething ring is rubbery and sticky like mine, it will soon be unable to twist around any more. In this case, unwind a few meters of yarn from your ball and make a new, small ball that you can push through the hole every time you go around the ring. You will also have to remove your hook, and re-insert it as you crochet through the center of the ring.
5.) Once the ring is sufficiently covered, SS in the next 2 sts for a neat finish, and tie off. Weave in the loose ends.

R5: *SC in next 3 sts. 2SC in next st.* Repeat all around. (30)
Now remove your hook from the Face, leaving the working-loop intact. Cut the tail, leaving a length of +/-1 m.
NOSE
R1: 6 SC in a magic ring. (6)
Remove your hook, leaving the working-loop intact. Cut the tail, leaving a length of +/-20 cm.
Working into the 1st stitch on R1 of the Face, insert hook into the Wrong Side and pull the tail through. Put the working-loop back on your hook.
Working into each st on Nose, and into each st of R1 on Face (through both layers), SS all around Nose. (6)
The Nose is now attached to the Face.
Weave in the ends.
EYES
R1: Skip 1st 3 sts on face. Working into Front Loops Only (FLO), join new colour with a SS. Ch1, SC in same st. In FLO, SC in next 4 sts. Ch1, turn. (5)
R2: SC 1st 2 sts together. SC in next st. SC last 2 sts togther. Ch1, turn. (3)
R3: SC all 3 sts together. Tie off, leaving a tail for securing to Face.
OPPOSITE EYE
R1: Counting backwards from last st, skip 7 sts on Face. Insert hook at 8th st in FLO. Join new colour with a SS. Ch1, SC in same st. SC in next 4 sts. Ch1, turn. (5)
R2: SC 1st 2 sts together. SC in next st. SC last 2 sts togther. Ch1, turn. (3)
R3: SC all 3 sts together. Tie off, leaving a tail for securing to Face.
You can now attach safety eyes, and use the loose ends to sew everything in place. I added a small disk of dark grey felt behind each eye.
NOW MAKE THE HEAD
R1-5: Follow the Face pattern.
R6: *SC in next 4 sts. 2SC in next st.* Repeat all around. (36)
Now remove your hook from the Head, leaving the working-loop and yarn intact so you can continue crocheting here later.
ATTACHING THE FACE TO THE HEAD
Lay the Face on top of the Head.
Working into the 1st stitch on R5 of the Head, insert hook into the Wrong Side and pull the Face’s tail through. Put the working-loop back on your hook.
Working into each st on Face, and into each st of R5 on Head (through both layers), SS all around Face. (30)
The Face is now attached to the Head.
Weave in the tail left on the Face, keeping the working-loop on the Head still intact.
CONTINUE WITH THE HEAD
R7: Picking up where you left off, *SC in next 4 sts. SC next 2 sts together.* Repeat all around. (30)
R8: *SC in next 3 sts. SC next 2 sts together.* Repeat all around. (24)
R9: SC in next 2 sts. SC next 2 sts together. HDC in next st. HDC next 2 sts together. HDC in next st. SC in next st. SC next 2 sts together. SC in next 2 sts. SC next 2 sts together. SC in next st. HDC in next st.HDC next 2 sts together. HDC in next st. SC next 2 sts together. SC in next 2 sts. (18)
R10: SC in next st. SC next 2 sts together. HDC in next st. HDC next 2 sts together. SC in next st. SC next 2 sts together. SC in next st. HDC next 2 sts together. HDC in next st. SC next 2 sts together. SC in next st. (12)
R11: SC next 2 sts together. (16)
Tie off, sew the hole closed, then sew the head to the teething ring. I have attached mine so that the ring is aligned with the center of the head, horizontally.
PAWS
Make 2
The claws are made with a Puff Stitch in a contrasting colour. How to make a Puff Stitch: *YO. Insert hook into st. Draw up a loop.* Twice. YO, draw through all 5 loops on hook. Ch1 to complete st.
To change colour, the last loop you draw through your stitch to complete the stitch should be done with the new colour. The next stitch is then worked in the new colour, now on your hook.
R1: 6SC in a magic ring. (6)
R2: Continue working in the round. SC in next 2 sts. Change to new colour, Puff Stitch in next st. Change colour, SC in next st. Change colour, Puff Stitch in next st. SC in next 3 sts. (8)
R3-4: SC in each st around. (8)
For a neat edge, SS in next 2 sts. Tie off. Sew the foot closed along the open end, then sew the foot to the teething ring.
Weave in any loose ends, and you’re done!
